Piñera Signs Education Cooperation Deal With Italy

http://www.santiagotimes.cl/news/education/20891-pinera-signs-education-cooperation-deal-with-italy

In a recent turn of events, president Sebastian Piñera signed a deal with Rome that, in its most basic sense, created an ‘alliance’ between the universities of Chile and Italy. This partnership is theorized to inspire more breakthroughs in green energy, because of Chile’s geothermal energy potential and Italy’s technology. Now that student mobility has increased between the two countries, it is hoped that they will both begin to venture further into the field of geothermal energy. This five-year plan will give Chile the chance to start using higher-budget technology to make use of the volcanic nature of their home country, and at the same time, allow Italian students to experience hands-on usage of a largely prominent geothermal-energy promising area.

Cooperation between universities is now being encouraged to students, and it is hoped that projects will begin to be developed in the near future.

Kiwifruit Cobbler

This recipe includes the kiwifruit as a major part of the dish. In Chile, the kiwifruit is one of the year’s most bountiful crops, and as such has a great abundance of them. This leads to some dishes like this one being created. The Kiwifruit  Cobbler is a variation on the regular fruit cobbler, being similar in lots of ways execution-wise, but the ingredients are a little twisted, using kiwi for the fruit base and corn-based flour products to make the dough. It tastes very good, though, regardless of what ingredients are put into it.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

12 large kiwifruit, peeled and cut into 3 4-inch cubes
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 2 package (3.2 oz) prepared corn muffin mix
1 tablespoon additional brown sugar
1 2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Vanilla ice cream or cream (optional)

Methods:

1. Preheat oven to 375ºF.
2. Place cubed kiwifruit in well-greased baking casserole. Combine brown sugar, lemon peel and flour and sprinkle on top of fruit. Mix lightly and place in hot oven for 25 minutes.
3. Prepare 1&Mac218;2 package muffin mix as directed. When fruit mixture is hot and bubbling, spoon on prepared mix. Mix the extra brown sugar and nutmeg and sprinkle on top. Return cobbler to oven for another 18 – 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and done.
4. Remove and allow to cool. Serve warm, with ice cream or cream, if desired.

Sebastián Piñera – President of Chile

Sebastián Piñera is now the President of Chile. He was elected on March 11, 2010. He is known as one of Chile’s richest people, and has a reputation as an investor, economist, politician, philanthropist, and more.

He has family history of politics as well. His father was actually the Chilean representative for the United Nations when Sebastián was only a kid.

Sebastián himself has a background mostly in economics, though. He was working for his postgraduate degree in economics, and was actually a Professor of Economics at the University of Chile.

He is also known for being one of the presidents of Chile that listens to people intently, starting an organization called the Coalition for Change that allows people to submit their ideas of whether things in the government are fair, or whether they have ideas.

Food in Chile

(Pastel de Choclo, a meat and corn pie commonly served in Chile)

The Chilean cuisine is in itself a very unique style, but when people of different cultures visit, they often find themselves eating something they’ve known before/are familiar with. This is because the cuisine in Chile is made up of not simply one cultural style of food, but rather a mix of the immigrants from the Eastern Hemisphere as well as the traditional South American native style of food. The Spanish were the first culinary immigrants to Chile, arriving in 1541 and bringing the Spanish cuisine to Chile, as well as some well-known ingredients such as grapes, some types of nuts, rice, wheat, sugar and spices. This began to mix with the South American culture, which relied on the base ingredient of corn for basically every type of food they could make. This combination formed some well known corn based dishes today in Chile known as humitas and pastel de choclo.

The rest of the immigrants to Chile were also very influential in making Chilean cuisine what it is today. The Germans brought with them various pastriets and cakes with them, the Italians brought ices which they flavored with the natural fruit of Chile, and the Arabs brought various herbs and spices and combined tastes of sweet and salty.

In the late 1800s-early 1900s, the British came along, and brought tea to Chile. It is now a popular custom in Chile to invite someone over for tea. It is commonly made as té con leche, or tea with milk.

About Chile

Chile is a South American country with a lot of interesting cultural characteristics. The geography of Chile itself is interesting in that it is very diverse. The northern part of Chile is mostly desert, the middle having a mediterranean climate, and the south being very tropical and lush. Regardless, almost all of it is covered in mountains, being situated right next to the Andes mountains, one of the tallest and longest mountain ranges in the world, surpassed only by the Himalayas.

The people of Chile have a very diverse culture as well. The culture is a mix between Spanish and traditional South American, being colonized by Spain for a long time. Even so, the physical characteristics of Chile itself affect the culture of the country, being in different climates.

One thing that remains the same throughout the country, however, is soccer. The national sport and the favorite of almost every Chilean citizen, soccer is a huge part of the culture as well. It’s played so often, the world takes note of how good they are in competitions worldwide (or maybe that’s just because they work harder to breathe several thousand feet higher in elevation).

I hope after this blog post you can realize how much of an interesting country Chile is.

Chile… and another vid.

Hi. I picked Chile for my Spanish country because I thought it would be an interesting place to study. The country of Chile is situated right on the western coast of South America, right on a mountain range that spans through the entire country. It will be interesting, because the location of Chile will probably change some of its customs/cultural characteristics as compared to the average Spanish speaking country.

Oh, and here’s another video:
